  1. Debbie, thanks so much for setting this up for us. I have a question for the group (once they sign on). Since I love flowers, but hate the time it takes to plant tend lots of annuals, I'm trying to put more perennials in my yard. Besides the usual (delphiniums, shasta daisies, irises, and daylilies) what other perennials have you had success with that survive -and thrive- in this climate zone?

  2. I love my chives, especially after they bloom. I love the purple flowers.

  3. There's a hardy variety of columbine (less showy)that I've had overwinter along with Larkspur which is quite pretty. Johnny jump ups will re-seed and are sweet!

  4. Yep, I've got poppies, chives and Johnny jump-ups too. Heather, did you originally start your columbine from seed? I've tried a couple of times with no luck. Has anyone had luck with peonies?

Maybe at our April meeting we can talk about doing a plant exchange?

  5. Sharon - I just started some "showy" columbine from seed yesterday so we will see.
I know Aleta has some peonies as perenials and they are BEAUTIFUL! She was given an plant and then got another plant from a friend's garden when they moved. She doesn't know why they keep surviving!

Depending on my seedlings success I'd be up for exchanging a few plants at the April meeting to help make room for later plantings in May.

I was thinking it might be fun for our next meeting for folk to bring some handy "tool" or technique you use for seed planting

  6. I optimistically bought some gladiola bulbs in FBX the other day. Am thinking I'll start them soon in some big pots, then set them into the dirt in June. Anybody grown gladiolas before? Any tips?
