yard advice?

Hi all, we have not talked much about our yards and I was curious if anyone has suggestions.  Yard work has always been one of my least favorite things, but I love a nice lawn so I guess I have to do the work :)
The yard is so full of dead grass, last year I thatched and thatched but it barely helped so this year thinking of burning it off first.  But Im wondering, does it really help that much? Do you have to reseed in some areas maybe that are just too dead?  Is it all worth it or is thatching better?  Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

How are all your plants doing?  If they are like mine, I cant wait to get them moved to the greenhouse and have my house and windows back !  My garden is a mud bog right now, but its drying good.  Im excited to get started on building the raised rows, may not put boxes around it for this year, but will try the raised effect for sure.  My rhubarb is looking good, and I need to get out and tend to the raspberries soon, Im sad to say my poor Iris is not looking like it has any life still, darn voles!  We moved that Iris plant with us across the state and it was so happy here and looked soo good. Oh well.  On a better note, I am trying Tomatillos for the first time this year and those plants are getting bigger than my tomatoes, Im wondering now how big they will get and I hope I get some good fruits from them.

Just curious what everyone is doing as far as garden preparation yet or is your garden still as muddy as mine?
Happy Gardening !

  1. I couldn't stand it any longer, so heated up the greenhouse and planted tomatoes and cukes a few days ago. So far they're still standing tall, so I started moving my flats of transplants out there too. It will be nice to have everything in one place for ease of watering, and I can quit going up and down the basement stairs!

Lawn is coming along ok, so I think we'll just rake and start watering. The voles had fun with it this winter though, so we're going to have to do some re-seeding. Anxious to know how your vole deterrent works, Debbie.

Can anyone give me their start date for potatoes?

  2. Im with you, running out of space in my house and tired of the stairs. I dont have heat in my GH so Im taking them out for the days and bringing them in at nights, oh well at least I dont have plants all over the place in the house now. I do have baby tomatillos already, Im very surprised at how fast they are growing since it is my first try with them. They passed up my tomato plants.

No burning allowed right now so I gave up on the idea of burning the yard for now and have just been watering and raking.

I got my vole deterrent going, but... should of read more about it first I guess. I thought the sound was only audible to the voles, Nope, its a very annoying beeping sound that goes off every 30 seconds, not good for near the house. I will use it in the garden and around my potatoes this year though to see how it goes.

Im thinking of starting potatoes around the 28th, the frost as of 5/12 was about 20 inches so another week of this warmth and it should be fine. Be curious to see what others are thinking or planning.
